G-T 1:1: What the homeroom students are saying... in 5 sentences.

Dear Homeroom Students,

In your groups discuss the impact you think 1:1 will have on our school. Consider your learning, your teachers' teaching, content, engagement, convenience, management, relationships, etc. If you are pro 1:1 and you believe that this is the direction our school should head, respond to this post.

Pick one representative to post (you will need a Google account). Please sign it as your homeroom (include first names (only) of all participating/agreeing).

In five carefully phrased sentences or less, state the impact 1:1 laptops will have on your education at G-T CSD.

  1. The 1:1 laptop program will benefit students and prepare them for the changing world. The laptops will open opportunities for students by having a computer available to them at all times; currently students struggle to get on a computer at home or at school. With personal laptops all of a student’s information is in one organized place; with the current system students are having difficulties keeping track of their projects, documents, presentation, and daily work. This will also help seniors by creating a more efficient Knights JAM presentation.-Leah Bisenius

  2. Mr. Hector's homeroom is in unanimous agreement that G-T High School should go 1:1. As students we will have unlimited access to information and our saved work will be in one spot. It will also further prepare us for the 21st Century and the already changed job market. Paper waste will be greatly reduced saving the school money as well as helping the environment. Having 1:1 will be a great promotional tool for G-T High School as it could help attract students and teachers to our district.

  3. As a homeroom we discussed the pros of getting this program in our school. We decided that this would be a great way to further our education. The world is becoming so technologically advanced, so fast, that this program is what we need to get us up to speed. We all agree that the communication process will be so much easier between the students and the teachers. Students without wireless Internet were discussed, but this is not to be seen as a con since students would be challenged to come up with different ways to collaborate (i.e. Internet Café Library idea).

  4. 5 Points--1:1 Computers

    1. Students will have immediate access to their own computer to work on their online classes and homework instead of having to share with family members.

    2. The District would save money because we would use less paper and possibly not have to purchase textbooks as they may be digital. Students could also be attracted to our District because they see the benefit of the 1:1 program. Thus creating revenue.

    3. The Community could become more involved by developing an Internet café at the local libraries for students. This could increase traffic in the libraries in general, and allow time for student discussion/collaboration.

    4. Students will be able to collaborate and work on projects in groups using websites, wikis, facebook, and their email accounts.

One to one laptops will allow students to be more up to date in technological advances.

  5. We believe one to one laptops would be a great assest to our school.

Students would have easy access and equal access to online resources, become more tech savvy, have no excuses for late or incomplete homework, get more accomplished on "no-school" days, stay up to date when not at school, and improve communication ability.

The school would incur less paper waste, have the ability to update textbooks using web resources (rather than purchasing paper books), and would have better ways to relate to and communicate students.

With this one to one initiative we would hopefully draw students from surrounding areas to G/T which would bring more revenue into our district.

  6. Mr. Benedict's homeroom agrees with the other homerooms regarding the benefits of the 1:1 laptop idea. Specifically, we see great potential for increased collaboration, greater ease of access (both to computers and to assignments), greater organization, attration of potential new students, and reduction in paper waste. We also believe that because students already find technology more interesting, that they will be more motivated to learn if they have regular and reliable access to it. Mr. Benedict even cites himself as an example of an "old dog" who is willing to "learn new tricks". He has started a web site to list his lesson plans and to provide access to assignments for which he has digital copies.

  7. Our homeroom would like this school district to approve the 1:1 laptop idea for the following reasons. First, it would be easier for siblings in high school to have computer access at home instead of sharing the one family computer. Second, it would be a logical way for students to organize their Knights Jam articfacts. Also, it would be easier to complete homework when you had to miss school. Next, we think that by having all students have their own laptops students would hand in or email more professional looking assignments. By letting Graettinger-Terril High School have 1:1 laptops we feel that it could creat more open enrollments and create an updated classroom that looks more like the real world.

  8. How do you get your home work done when you don't have a computer? This wouldn't be a problem if your school provided your own 1:1 laptop for you. No more excuses of "I couldn't get it done", or "I don't have a computer will be able to work." Each student will be able to take home their own computer and work outside of school to get their work done. Not only does it benefit us now while we're still in high school, but students at G/T high will be more advanced in technology when it comes to jobs and college.
